Target Corp. recently implemented virtualization technologies by Microsoft to run business-critical applications for all 1,755 stores. Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V was added to help deploy and manage applications more quickly, eliminating 8,650 physical servers. Microsoft System Center was integrated to manage and patch endpoints. With these technologies, Target’s IT department has greater agility and economies of scale.
“Target’s investment in Hyper-V is a result of the strong technology partnership between our two companies,” says Jeff Mader, vice president of Target Technology Services. “With Hyper-V, Target can reduce our stores’ server footprints without sacrificing the mission-critical application performance that contributes to a superior retail experience for our guests.”
Earlier this year, Target scaled its deployment of Hyper-V to every U.S. store. Applications ranging from Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1, SharePoint 2007 and Exchange 2007 to third-party, line-of-business software can now be deployed and managed more quickly, with over 8,000 less servers to maintain, power and refresh.
Target also implemented the Microsoft System Center management platform. The platform manages and patches endpoints ranging from servers and PCs to mobile inventory devices and POS registers. System Center provides automation, insight and data that helps ensure Target shoppers can quickly find the products they need at the lowest possible cost.
