Cloud Computing ‘Key’ to Mobile Broadband

Mobile phone applications need to become open to several devices in order to take advantage of mobile broadband and cloud computing, it has been revealed.

Randall Stephenson, chief executive of AT&T, says customers will expect more and more from their mobile devices in future, especially the use of apps via mobile broadband.

Speaking at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona, he said: “Mobile broadband was talked about for three or four years, and now it’s a ubiquitous, integral part of business and society, and the same thing is happening with the cloud.

“Open interoperable systems are vital, as mobile broadband and cloud computing capabilities will drive the next wave of growth in mobile broadband. We’ve seen this in a large way with the Amazon Kindle.”

The Kindle’s ability to be “device and network agnostic” was a “gutsy” and “savvy” move by Amazon, he added.

According to the Mr Stephenson, the ability to access software on various devices will become the centre of the entire mobile “ecosystem”.

Recent data from the International Data Corporation has revealed that cloud computing models will experience strong growth over the next few years.

The firm predicts that cloud systems management software will be worth more than £1.5 billion by 2015.

In addition, the software is set to be the top technology priority for chief information officers in UK businesses, according to 2e2.

The IT services firm says cloud computing models offer greater flexibility and provide a low-cost alternative to traditional technology, as departments can manage peaks and troughs in the demand for applications and services.

Nathan Marke, chief information officer at 2e2, says cost pressures on IT departments throughout the recession have made cloud computing more popular. The challenge faced by officers is to establish which type of model is best for their needs.
